| How to make a variety of simple puppets: shadow puppets, jumping jacks, large scale articulated puppets, for effective group and SEN work, including templates. |
PUPPETS & PAPER TECHNOLOGY: THURS 6 MARCH 08, 4.00 – 6.00PM |
| How to make a variety of imaginative and expressive puppets from different types of paper & card using skills such as folding, scoring, curling, shaping plus decorative techniques. Templates provided. |
JUST ROD PUPPETS: THURS 20 MAR 08, 4.00 – 6.00PM |
How to make a simple Egyptian rod puppet and learn how to operate using simple puppeteering techniques. Class starter pack of puppet making materials available to buy on request with this in-service session.

LYRICAL MARIONETTES: THURS 8 MAY 08, 4.00 – 6.00PM |
| How to make a simple marionette with a ball for the head, flowing fabric and a simple string mechanism. Your puppet will not only be able to dance and to do lyrical routines. It can do handstands too! |

BIRTHDAY PARTY PUPPET MAKING WORKSHOPS |
| Birthday parties can be booked at the centre JUST FOR YOU, on most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Workshop parties can be tailor-made to your requirements and can include
a workshop with a break for juice and cake, or a workshop with party food, or a workshop with party food and games all provided by the Centre. All we ask is that you bring the cake…….. and the kids. We’ll happily do the rest and afterwards we’ll clear up all the mess. |

| The Centre's Education
Department offers workshops for children and adults, including special in-service
training for teachers. Outreach services may be booked on a Thursdays and Fridays
by booking in advance. They range from two-hour classes to four week residencies. |

FUNKY PUPPETS: |
| Design and make a rod puppet using simple materials including a central rod, choice of colourful head, arms, fabric costume and hands. A wide selection of decorative materials is provided for making eyes, noses and additional characterisation, from all the bits and bobs boxes. What type of puppet will you create? Learn how to operate your puppet to fun music. |
EGYPTIAN PUPPETS

| Travel back in time and create your very own Egyptian boy or girl puppet, complete with bobbed hairstyle, colourful neck dress and beaded accessories. Learn how to operate your puppet to music before you go. |
WHAT’S RUBBISH: SAT 23 FEB, 10.00AM |
We throw away rubbish everyday, but if we stretch our imagination a little bit, we may actually be able to see a body, or a face, or even a mouth….! This workshop will invite you to delve amongst everyday household rubbish and find characters, which in turn can be animated using simple puppeteering techniques, which we will show you and rubbish can tell us it’s own story! |

| In partnership with the Magners Glasgow International Comedy Festival www.glasgowcomedyfestival.com Come and have lots of puppet making pop up fun. What comical character would you like to make maybe a clown or what about Charlie Chaplin? All materials supplied and lots of bits and bobs to choose from to make your very own puppet. |
DANCING MARIONETTES: SAT 7TH JUN 10.00AM |
| Make your very own dancing string marionette from simple materials, a ball for the head, flowing fabric and a simple string mechanism, a simple puppet and a great way to introduce children to this delightful art-form. Your puppet will not only be able to dance it can do handstands too… |
| Workshops are two hours in duration and £6.50 per child/ person, including all materials. |
Full range of workshop descriptions available for booking on request – Please let us know the size of the group the age range, number of your own support staff and any particular requirements you may have for the group. Costs are based on the number or our own staff required to run the workshop, including materials/preparation and travel if we come to you plus VAT. Or you can bring your group to the centre, and we provide refreshments.
Workshops can also be combined with talks and or shows if coming to the Centre.

Resources: |
| Teachers can learn how
to bring mask and puppet theatre into the classroom through our Guide to Masks
and Puppets in the Curriculum, and identify major suppliers from our free
Material Suppliers contact list. The
Library and Audio-Visual Collection is available to Teachers for research and
consultation purposes on Saturday afternoon between 1pm and 4pm. Please book in
advance by telephoning : 0141 339 6185.
Special School
Performances are listed on our General Brochure, published twice yearly
in August and January. We offer discounts to school parties: £1 per child,
and 3 teachers admitted free of charge on group bookings of 20 plus.
A cautionary
note: The BP Technology Option in The Puppet Company is designed to be implemented
through a period of about one year. The instructions of making a puppet stage
are flawed and unworkable. This pack has been written by a teacher not by a puppeteer! |

Service |
We can tailor-make courses
and workshops to your requirements. Previous clients include the Inspiration Festival
(Glasgow City Council), Scotland Street Museum, Glasgow Museums, The Kaleidoscope Festival, Hamilton Museum,
North Lanarkshire Council, South Lanarkshire Council, and Bellarmyne Children's
Centre. We can come to you in an outreach capacity or you can come to us and take part in our in-house workshops.
SMPC works closely with Glasgow City Council Education Department and hosts in-service teacher training sessions and direct service provision to the primary and secondary school sector. We also undertake collaborative performance projects based on cultural animation. We are currently working in partnership with Giant Productions and the RSNO (Royal Scottish National Orchestra) to produce 'What's Fishing' with Merkland and Campsie View Special Schools in Kirkintilloch during October 2004. This project is funded by East Dunbarton District Council. |

book one of our tutors for an evening talk or lecture demonstration. Previous
clients include Glasgow Theosophical Society, Kelvindale Lunch Club, The Lanark
Dante Aligheri Society, Paisley Museum and Art Gallery, The Brittania Panopticon Trust. |

| Therapy
and
Special Needs |
| The Centre has undertaken
a wide range of projects over a twenty year period with groups such as Belsdyke
Psychiatric Hospital, Barlinnie Prison Special Unit, Langlands Special School,
The Epilepsy Association, Richmond Park Special School, The Maryhill One-in-Four
Centre, Yorkhill Children's Hospital, Dramatherapy North-West LEGATO and The CarstairsState Hospital.
During
1990-96 the Centre had a full-time Therapeutic Puppetry Consultant, Mickey Aronoff,
from the USA. The Centre has amassed a range of published and unpublished materials
in this regard, and also led therapeutic workshop projects in Greece, Russia,
Mexico, Venezuela, Finland, France and Germany.
In 1995 Malcolm
Knight designed and wrote two 40 hour courses in Puppetry and Special Needs
for Anniesland College, which were validated by the Scottish Qualifications
Authority. These courses are empowerment and discovery-based modules which range
across areas of self-healing, definitions of therapy, health education, prison
'free expression groups', and diagnostic approaches to children with emotional
disturbance, grief counselling and bereavement, and uses of masks and puppets
in hospitals. They are in the public domain and may be adapted to your needs.
At present Glenrothes College in Fife has implemented an Art Therapy Course,and
we have assisted with this development. |
