Clydebuilt are a very adaptable touring company playing to family audiences of 40-250. They have developed a wide range of shows through visual, dramatic and entertaining interpretations of classic myths, stories and contemporary works. Originally formed in 1987 by Stephen Smart and Leigh McCalister, Clydebuilt, make, design and perform shows using rod puppets, shadow theatre, life sized body puppets and object theatre. The company is well known for its excellent movement and manipulation skills and with these they aim to help the puppets tell the stories, with the help of especially written music and storytelling scripts. The company has a wide repertoire of shows including: 'The Magic of The Mummy' and 'Thor's Magic Hammer' ; also 'Finders Keepers' a special show for younger children aged 3 years plus. The Centre has a puppeteer in residence, a film and special effects maker and staff who can help and advise on puppetry in education and special needs. Professional performance projects, master classes, workshops and courses for children and adults, book sales, reference library, puppet training workshops, national and international files on puppet companies and organisations and links worldwide are all available. The Centre also hosts Personae-Mask and Puppet Books - a worldwide service to puppeteers and puppet centres (www.maskandpuppetbooks.co.uk or tel: 0141 576 0112) and houses Grant Mason Special Effects (0141 357 3757) for special commissions for film and television (i.e. Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, Taggart etc). Standing exhibition is open to the public Mon, Tue, Wed & Sat afternoons and at other times by appointment. Touring Exhibition 'The Magic of Masks and Puppets' is touring in England, Wales and Scotland 2000-02 to museums and galleries. (See Exhibition schedule). The British Centre of UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionette) issues a Newsletter four times a year and a Bulletin. It also distributes UNIMA Correo and holds a dossier of companies seeking engagements overseas which will be sent to organisers of foreign festivals. UNIMA has centres in most countries around the world and holds a Congress and Festival every four years. Founded in 1928 in Czechoslavkia, the current world centre of operations is in Charleville-Mezieres, France. Its aim is to promote international peace, friendship and understanding among nations by means of puppet theatre and related activities. Its structure is based on commissions: international, publications, young people etc. In 2006 it plans to publish a World Encyclopaedia of Puppetry Arts. The cost of membership is £18 per annum.
